| NE Neighbors for Clean Air and Environmental-Health Advocacy |
|
Are you concerned about air quality in your neighborhood and want to help make a difference? Northeast Neighbors for Clean Air (NENCA) was formed in 2007 to organize the citizens-response to Boeing's DEQ application to increase VOC emissions in NE Portland. To date, NENCA has focused on this one environmental-health issue. However, there is a growing interest to expand the focus of this group. The vision is to have NENCA become an ongoing community organizing body that helps neighborhoods address environmental-related health and land-use issues. The scope of NENCA's future work depends on the interest of community members! You are invited to get involved, join the discussion about the future of NE Neighbors for Clean Air. Thursday, April 24th 7:30-9p at CNN, 4415 NE 87th. |

| Community Groups Exhibit for Free at Base to Butte Community Event! |

Looking to spread the word about your particular organization or non-profit? The Madison South Neighborhood Association (near Madison High School) is putting on an exciting new community event called "Base to Butte" which will kick off with a community fair, then lead into an organized walk up to the top of scenic Rocky Butte. The event is scheduled for Saturday May 3rd from 10am-2pm at Hancock Park (NE 90th and Tillamook) and is a great way to build up community awareness for your organization. The good news is that the event is only 4 hours long so even though it is a weekend, it is a great way to spread the word about your organization. The Central Northeast Neighbors Small Grants Program made this community-building gathering possible, and the event is also sponsored by Banfield The Pet Hospital. All exhibitors are free but you must register in advance. For more information and to get a registration form: events@madisonsouth.org or call 503-539-3954. |

| Portland Grassroots Media Camp for Underrepresented Groups |
Invitation to participate in the 2008 Portland Grassroots Media Camp, which will take place on the PCC Cascade Campus from September 12th-14th. The Portland Grassroots Media Camp is a weekend of hands-on skill shares, media workshops, presentations, discussions and gatherings aimed to empower people with tools and skills to express themselves. The camp is open to anyone, emphasizing the inclusion of those who are traditionally excluded from media representation, creation and production. For the Media Camp in August of 2007 we came up with a formula for a free alternative media gathering that would primarily focus on getting media making skills to people in immigrant communities, while including all other participants who wanted to teach or learn a skill. | Genetics Town Hall: Speak up about National Biobanks |
The biobank would contain genetic samples and health information from volunteers. Scientists would use the information in the biobank to conduct research on the causes of many common diseases. Although biobanks provide a valuable research tool for scientists studying disease, some people have concerns. Could the information be used against participants? Who would have access to the database? Could employers, insurers, or law enforcement agencies gain access to their data? Who would decide what kind of research could be done on the biobank? Are the risks worth the rewards? It's time to speak up. The National Institutes of Health and other federal healthcare agencies are considering a large study to create a biobank. The Genetics and Public Policy Center is conducting a town hall in Portland. Our community has an opportunity to shape a study that may have tremendous impact on the future of health care. WHEN: April 24, 2008, 5:30 PM WHERE: Oregon Convention Center/ more information and registration. |
